New Student Mentor Program
New to St George's? Don't be nervous. Our New Student Mentor Program is designed to make new students feel at home from day one.
St George’s takes great pride in our warm, inclusive culture. We are small enough to care, yet big enough for brilliance.
— Mrs Tina Campbell, Principal
St George's Anglican Grammar School is an appealing alternative for students seeking a fresh start during their secondary education.
The school's smaller size, unique city location, pastoral care and learning opportunities combine to attract new students across all year groups throughout the academic year.
Our New Student Mentor Program is a vital support mechanism. Adapting to a new environment, interacting with unfamiliar teachers and peers and navigating different learning systems can be overwhelming - if students are not provided with both peer and staff support.
When a student commences their St George’s journey at any point other than at the start of Year 7, they are paired with New Student Mentors to facilitate their integration into the cohort and wider school community.
At 8:30am on the new student's first day, the Student Mentors, alongside the Head of Year, will greet them at the ground floor Reception. Over the next hour, a new student will engage in a tour around the school and, where possible, be introduced to their teachers. Heads of Year are also available during this time to assist the new student with their locker, laptop set up, access to our Learning Management Systems and to answer any questions, such as how we use the city as our campus. The wider St George's staff are also made aware of new student arrivals to enhance their welcome.
Over the first two weeks of their St George’s journey, New Student Mentors guide students to their classes, arrange a location to meet up during break times and share information about the school. Pastoral support staff contact families during the first week to provide an insight into their transition.
Depending on their year level, new students can also be involved in our Out and About in Perth program, Park Play (supervised lunch at Elizabeth Quay or Central Park) or Senior Status - joining fellow Year 11 and 12s for lunch or recess out in the city.
Our new student mentors have all volunteered for this important role and are therefore invested in assisting new students to enjoy a smooth transition into our school community.
